Two young men from Pennsylvania were arrested Saturday after police discovered suspicious devices during clashing protests outside Gracie Mansion, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani and First Lady Rama Duwaji were present at the time.

The devices, described by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch as smaller than a football, appeared to be jars wrapped in black tape containing nuts, bolts, screws and a hobby fuse. Tisch said the bomb squad was investigating whether the devices were functional.

The arrests occurred as two opposing protest groups faced off outside the mayor’s official Upper East Side residence. Conservative influencer Jake Lang led an anti-Islam demonstration called “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City, Stop New York City Public Muslim Prayer,” while a counterprotest also took place at the scene.

According to police, the two arrested men, ages 18 and 19, were counterprotesters to Lang’s demonstration. Sources familiar with the investigation told NBC New York that law enforcement officers have traveled to Pennsylvania to speak with the suspects’ relatives.

The FBI’s joint terrorism task force has joined the investigation, according to sources familiar with the probe.

“Thankfully, the Mayor and the First Lady are both safe, though the events are a stark reminder of the threats they both face regularly,” a spokesperson for the mayor said.

The incident resulted in six total arrests Saturday. Beyond the two men whom Tisch described as “responsible for handling and deploying the devices,” police also arrested one person for deploying pepper spray and three others on charges related to disorderly conduct and obstructing traffic.

The confrontation highlights ongoing tensions in New York City around religious and political demonstrations. Gracie Mansion, located in Carl Schurz Park on the Upper East Side, has served as the official residence of New York City mayors since 1942 and has been the site of various protests throughout its history.

Mayor Mamdani, who took office earlier this year, has faced various security challenges during his tenure. The presence of suspicious devices at a protest outside his residence represents a significant escalation in security concerns for city officials.

The NYPD’s bomb squad continues to analyze the confiscated devices to determine their potential functionality and the intent behind their construction. The materials found within the devices - including nuts, bolts and screws - are commonly associated with improvised explosive devices designed to cause maximum harm through shrapnel.

Law enforcement’s swift response prevented any injuries during the incident. The deployment of the FBI’s joint terrorism task force indicates the serious nature of the investigation and the potential federal implications of the case.

The arrests come amid a broader national climate of heightened tensions around political and religious demonstrations. Saturday’s events demonstrate the challenges facing law enforcement in managing competing protest groups while ensuring public safety.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full scope of the plot and whether additional individuals may have been involved. The cooperation between local and federal law enforcement agencies reflects the gravity with which officials are treating the incident.

City officials have not announced any changes to security protocols at Gracie Mansion following Saturday’s events, though the incident will likely prompt a review of current safety measures for the mayor’s residence.
