Families across New York City will have numerous opportunities to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this March, with events ranging from the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade to intimate craft sessions at local libraries, according to a roundup of activities scheduled throughout the five boroughs.
The centerpiece celebration remains the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which begins at 5th Avenue at 44th Street in Midtown on Tuesday, March 17 at 11 a.m., according to event organizers. The parade, billed as the oldest and largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world, will feature approximately 150,000 participants including bagpipers, marching bands, Irish step dancers and floats. The event honors St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland and of the Archdiocese of New York, organizers state.
Manhattan venues are hosting several family-focused activities leading up to the holiday. The George Bruce Library at 518 West 125th Street in Harlem will offer a free rainbow-making craft session for children ages 3-12 on Friday, March 13 from 4 to 5 p.m., according to the library’s schedule.
The Tenement Museum at 103 Orchard Street on the Lower East Side presents a “St. Patrick’s Day: Family Program” on Sunday, March 15 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The program, designed for ages 5-12, features a costumed interpreter portraying Bridget Moore, an Irish immigrant from the 1860s. Admission costs $15 for adults, $10 for children, and $7.50 for museum members, according to the museum.
The Children’s Museum of Manhattan at 212 West 83rd Street will host “Lucky Me! Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day” on Tuesday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The program, designed for children ages 8 and younger, focuses on creating art inspired by symbols of luck and gratitude. The activity is included with the museum’s $18 admission fee.
Brooklyn residents can attend multiple parade celebrations throughout March. The 51st Brooklyn St. Patrick’s Day Parade runs along Prospect Park West between 9th and 14th Streets in Park Slope on Sunday, March 15 at 1 p.m., featuring marching bands, step dancing and floats, according to parade organizers.
The 31st Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins at Marine Avenue and 3rd Avenue on Sunday, March 22 at 1 p.m., showcasing floats, live performances, bagpipers and dancers, organizers state.
Cultural programming includes a performance by the O’Malley Irish Dance Academy at the Gerritsen Beach Library, located at 2808 Gerritsen Avenue, on Thursday, March 12 from 6 to 7 p.m. The free Irish step dance performance aims to promote Irish culture and St. Patrick’s Day spirit, according to the library.
The Bronx offers its own parade celebration with the Throggs Neck St. Patrick’s Day Parade beginning at East Tremont and Lafayette Avenues on Sunday, March 15 at noon. The event features bagpipers, community leaders and bands, according to organizers.
Several Bronx libraries are hosting craft activities on St. Patrick’s Day itself. The Westchester Square Library at 2521 Glebe Avenue will present “St. Patrick’s Day Facts & Craft” for ages 6-12 from 4 to 4:45 p.m., while the High Bridge Library at 78 West 168th Street offers a paper plate shamrock craft for ages 3-4 from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Both events are free.
Additional craft opportunities include a kaleidoscope-making session at Macomb’s Bridge Library at 2633 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard in Harlem on Tuesday, March 17 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The free program for ages 5-12 is designed as a quiet arts and crafts session, according to the library.
All parade events are free and open to all ages, while library and museum programs have varying age restrictions and admission fees.
